Project details
9 Williams Street
Boston, MA
Kaplan recently completed the restoration of a 51,520 SF historic building, formerly the Tropical Foods supermarket, to create 30 apartment units of affordable housing and ground floor retail space. Apartments range from studio to three bedrooms. Extensive renovations were required, including new framing, roof and core area for the elevator and stairwells. As a historic building, the masonry restoration was obligated to meet National Park Service standards. The building received new windows, new storefront, and new stucco on the exterior of the building. Kaplan pulled all new utilities into the building and installed new MEP/FP systems.
The project is the second in the three-phase development of Parcel 10 and the outcome of an eight year effort by the Roxbury community and the City of Boston to bring economic diversity and private investment to Dudley Square.
In 2018, Kaplan won an Excellence in Construction Award from the Massachusetts Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC MA). Kaplan received the Eagle Award, the highest level of recognition, in the category of historical restorations/renovations over $1MM. The Eagle Award represents the pinnacle of achievement and recognizes overall excellence regarding project execution, craftsmanship, safety, innovative elements and challenges, and client satisfaction.
