Chabad at Chestnut Hill

Chestnut Hill, MA

Chabad at Chestnut Hill is a nonprofit organization that provides religious, educational, and community programming for the growing Jewish population in Chestnut Hill, Mass. and the surrounding neighborhoods. Kaplan recently began construction of their new 23,000 SF center that will serve as a permanent home for worship, learning, celebrations, and community gatherings.

The new Chabad includes a synagogue, social hall, preschool and religious school classrooms, commercial kitchen, Mikvah, administrative offices, and outdoor gathering spaces. The building features a combination of stone and precast masonry, stucco, and lead-coated copper, while the site incorporates a rear courtyard, playground, parking area, electric vehicle charging stations, and landscaped outdoor spaces.

Prior to vertical construction, Kaplan completed extensive site preparation work on the challenging property. Because much of the site consisted of solid ledge, the team utilized drilling and blasting to prepare the site for construction while minimizing impacts on neighboring properties. Additional excavation was required to accommodate the below-grade Mikvah, including the removal of significant ledge and the implementation of a temporary dewatering system to address unexpected groundwater conditions.

Once complete, the new center will provide flexible spaces for worship, education, cultural programming, and gatherings, creating a welcoming destination for generations to come. Construction is underway and is scheduled for completion in late summer 2027.

  • For many years, we've dreamed of creating a permanent home that reflects the warmth, energy, and growth of our community. Today, that dream is becoming a reality thanks to the incredible generosity and support of so many people who have helped bring us to this moment. Kaplan has been an important partner throughout the process, helping us navigate challenges and prepare for the road ahead.
