Sportsmen’s Tennis and Enrichment Center – Phases III & IV

Dorchester, MA

Founded in 1961, Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center is a nonprofit organization that uses tennis, education, and enrichment programming to serve youth and families across Greater Boston. Following the successful completion of Phases 1 and 2 of Sportsmen’s campus transformation in 2024, Kaplan was selected to continue as construction manager for the final phases of the capital improvements plan.

Phase 3 includes the construction of an 8,300 SF single-story steel and light-gauge metal-framed connector building within the existing open-air breezeways between Sportsmen’s three court buildings. The addition physically unifies the campus while creating new locker rooms, a gym, and social gathering spaces for members and youth program participants. The project also incorporates permanent exhibits celebrating the history of Black tennis in America and the athletes who challenged exclusion, as well as Billie Jean King’s fight for equal pay in women’s sports. Additional site improvements include two new outdoor tennis courts and expanded outdoor recreation space to support summer camp and other programming.

Phase 4 focuses on the renovation and strategic expansion of existing first floor spaces. The project creates a new welcome center and transforms former office areas into a teaching kitchen, multi-purpose community space, viewing gallery, pro shop, and additional staff offices. These improvements are designed to enhance the visitor experience, support day-to-day operations, and provide flexible spaces for community programming. Throughout construction, careful phasing and coordination are allowing Sportsmen’s to remain fully operational for staff and members.

Together, Phases 3 and 4 further integrate athletics and education while expanding Sportsmen’s ability to serve future generations. The improvements build on the organization’s longstanding mission, creating new opportunities for learning, recreation, and connection across the campus.

  • Sportsmen’s has transformed dramatically in recent years, and this phase represents our most meaningful investment yet. Kaplan’s familiarity with our campus brings invaluable continuity to this work. Their team understands how to operate within a highly active facility while prioritizing safety and keeping our mission at the center of every decision.
