Lena Park Community Center
Mattapan, MA
Kaplan was retained by Lena Park Community Development Corporation (CDC) and community development organization Urban Edge to manage construction services at the Lena Park Community Center in Mattapan, Mass. A former school, Lena Park CDC sold all but 10,000 SF to a charter school and hired Kaplan Construction to transform the space into a community center.
Kaplan renovated the interior which included framing two existing squash courts to create a multi-purpose room and installing skylights to create a warm environment for use as office space. To transform the 10,000 SF space into a community center Kaplan constructed multiple rooms including the 1,100 SF multi-purpose room, three classrooms, a meeting/community room, a lounge, office space, a tech café and kitchen, and new bathrooms. The facility will provide the community resources that will empower and support individuals and their families to become more self-sufficient and an active participant in their development and the health of their community.
Over the course of the project Kaplan employed a significant number of construction workers from the local neighborhood (51% Boston residents) in addition to minority workers (77%). Kaplan also contracted with 27% MBE and 35% WBE businesses.
