Hanscom Air Force Base Pool
Bedford, MA
Hanscom Air Force Base’s 66th Force Support Squadron provides a variety of morale, welfare and recreational activities for the base community, including an indoor Olympic-sized swimming pool. The pool’s aging air-pressurized bubble was expensive to maintain and provided poor energy efficiency. Kaplan replaced the bubble with a new 24,000 SF pool enclosure that was constructed using an insulated semi-transparent Kalwall shell with operable side and roof panels. Glass walls and color glazed block allow natural light to filter into the swimming area. To provide added efficiency, new energy recovery HVAC, drainage and filtration systems were installed.
