BOSTON – August 24, 2026 – Kaplan Construction, a WBE general contractor and construction management firm providing comprehensive building programs across Greater Boston, announced today that it has completed renovations at Interfaith Apartments, two historic affordable housing buildings located at 282 Columbus Avenue and 68 West Concord Street in Boston’s South End. The renovations modernized the occupied residential buildings through energy-efficiency upgrades and exterior restoration. The properties are owned by Haley House, a nonprofit organization that has provided housing and nourishment to neighbors in need for 60 years, with Maloney Properties serving as the property manager. Maloney Development LLC, dba Cira Development, served as the development consultant.
The renovation encompassed two occupied apartment buildings totaling more than 60,000 SF and 59 affordable housing units. Work included façade restoration, masonry repointing and repairs, exterior wall insulation, interior painting, wood door refinishing, slate roof repairs at 282 Columbus Avenue, and the replacement of 96 windows at 68 West Concord Street.
The project also included several specialized restoration and building performance upgrades. Kaplan restored a historic cast-iron roof rail dating to the late 1800s and utilized a minimally invasive pinhole insulation process to improve the buildings’ thermal performance while preserving existing finishes. The improvements also support compliance with Boston’s Building Emissions Reduction and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO).
Quality control played a significant role throughout construction. Kaplan coordinated masonry and window mockups with the design team and the South End Landmarks Commission before work began and conducted bi-weekly site walks with the owner and architect to review progress. Window mockups also underwent blower testing to verify air and water performance, while hazardous materials were carefully tested and abated where required before renovation activities began.
Because residents remained in their homes throughout construction, Kaplan worked closely with Maloney Properties to develop a detailed construction schedule and maintain clear communication with tenants during this phased approach. The project was completed in June 2026.
