From the earliest stages of the conceptual design process, the Brookline Teen Center organization was committed to sustainability as a core value. In April 2015, the project became LEED certified to the Silver level. The BTC features many environmentally responsible elements including the use of sustainable building materials, water-efficient practices, and a green mechanical and electrical system within a more energy-efficient exterior envelope. Other green practices include:
- Alternative transportation – public transportation access, low emitting & fuel efficient vehicles, and parking capacity
- Water efficient landscaping – reduced by 50% and no potable water use/no irrigation
- Reduced water usage up to 30%
- Optimized energy performance through HVAC, lighting, and building envelope upgrades
- Building reuse – maintained 95% of existing shell
- Diverted 75% of construction waste from landfills
- Used 20% recycled content (e.g., highway guardrails for railing systems)
- Used 20% locally manufactured materials
- Used 50% certified wood
- Developed construction Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) management plan
- Low-emitting materials – adhesives & sealants, paints & coatings, carpet, and composite wood
