BOSTON – March 14, 2023 – Kaplan Construction, a WBE general contractor and construction management firm providing comprehensive building programs across Greater Boston, announced today it has ranked thirteenth on the list of the 40 largest women-owned businesses in Massachusetts by the Boston Business Journal (BBJ) based on total 2022 revenue. To be considered for the list, the Massachusetts-based business must be owned at least 51 percent by a woman or women. This is the second year Kaplan has been included on the BBJ’s list of largest women-owned businesses in Massachusetts.
In 2014, Jane became the majority owner and COO of Kaplan Construction. One of Jane’s first undertakings as the newly appointed COO was spearheading the effort to be certified as a Women Business Enterprise (WBE) by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. WBEs are entities that are at least 51 percent owned and/or controlled by women.
At Kaplan, nearly one quarter of its employees are women, well above the industry average of 10%. In addition, Kaplan frequently performs on projects requiring Boston Resident Jobs Policy (BRJP) compliance and has employed a significant number of women and minority-owned subcontractors in doing so. The firm has met or exceeded the 10% WBE utilization requirement on several recent projects in Boston, including 9 Leyland Street, Lyman School Apartments, 9 Williams Street, St. Botolph Terrace, Lena Park Community Center, 35 West Newton Street, and 11 Mount Pleasant Avenue.
Previously, Kaplan has been included on the BBJ’s list of largest family-owned businesses. In addition, it was featured on the list of Top 100 Women-Led Businesses in Massachusetts by The Commonwealth Institute (TCI) for seven years in a row.
Kaplan’s services include preconstruction, general contracting, construction management, and design/build. Recent projects include Miltons – The Store for Men in Burlington, The Village Works in Jamaica Plain, Trust Early Learners in Brookline, and Castle Island Brewery in South Boston.
