Kaplan Wraps Up Renovations for Boston Children’s Hospital’s Sports Medicine

Kaplan Construction completed a 4,200 SF renovation on the sixth floor at 319 Longwood Avenue to create a new home for the Boston Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine Division, the largest and most experienced pediatric and young adult sports medicine practice in the country.

Kaplan started by taking the existing space down to the studs and creating one open room before constructing nine exam rooms, staff lounge, surgical team room, and medical team room along with new bathrooms, reception desk, and common areas. The x-ray room received updated millwork, lighting, flooring, and paint.

With limited floor-to-ceiling height throughout the space, Kaplan worked closely with the sub-consultants to coordinate the installation of the new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP), and sprinkler systems. Another challenge was the project’s location near the main entrance of the hospital in the heart of the congested Longwood Medical Area. Kaplan could not set up equipment such as cranes on the street, so everything had to be carried manually.

As the building was occupied during the renovations, Kaplan scheduled work to begin at 4:00 a.m. so any disruptive work would be concluded before normal business hours.

Previously, Kaplan renovated medical offices for Longwood Pediatrics, a 75-year-old private pediatric medical practice located in the same building.
