BOSTON – January 28, 2020 – Kaplan Construction, a WBE general contractor and construction management firm providing comprehensive building programs across Greater Boston, is pleased to announce that the company is one of Boston Business Journal’s Largest Women-Owned Businesses in Massachusetts. The list includes Massachusetts-based companies where a woman owns at least 51 percent of the business. Kaplan ranked sixth on the list with $49.5 million in 2019 revenue.
For the first time, the Business Journal ranked the state’s largest women-owned businesses as a standalone list. Previously, the ranking of companies by revenue had been a combined list of minority- and women-owned businesses in Massachusetts.
Nationally, women-owned businesses make up 42% of all businesses, employ 9.4 million workers and generate $1.9 trillion of revenue, according to a 2019 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report commissioned by American Express. The number of women-owned businesses in the U.S. also increased by 21% between 2014 and 2019, while all businesses increased by 9%, according to the report. And women-owned businesses employed more people during that time too — the report found total employment by women-owned businesses rose 8%, while for all businesses the increase was 1.8%.
